MONTSERRAT
Population: Approx. 5,000 remain on island after evacuations Description: 39 sq. miles A green and mountainous island which rises in a series of dramatic slopes to the high point of the Soufriere Hills volcano at 3000 feet in the South. This active volcano has taken over much of the island since it began to erupt in 1995 -- the island has been divided into various exclusion zones which are illegal to enter -- and the formerly picturesque capital of Plymouth lies covered in ash. In some areas, only the roof tops are visible. Numerous nature trails with beautiful vistas. Only one white sand beach on the island -- the others are black and undeveloped. |
