BARBADOS
Population: 260,000 approx. Description: 166 sq. mile limestone island and relatively flat. Once heavily planted with sugar cane, but increasingly turning over to hotels, golf courses, up-market residential communities, and international commercial districts. West coast has several beautiful and expensive hotels/ private homes set on pale-sand beaches. South coast is a tourist hot spot: restaurants, hotels, night clubs. North-East and East coasts are rugged and less spoiled, with Atlantic surf and highest point at Mt. Hillaby at 1100 feet. Numerous 18-19th century structures, including churches, plantation homes, and colleges. |
